What’s “And Now, A Sonnet”?

And Now, A Sonnet is a sonnet series I began on Substack as a way to respond to world events around me. The first year was a test run to see if I’d be able to write quality poems on a weekly basis; beginning on my second year I’m excited to open the space up to other poets, both emerging and established.

I’m looking for sonnets that excites language, sonnets that ask to be read aloud and to sit and ponder over. I’m very much interested in world events. The form of the sonnet (from Italian, to English, to American) doesn’t matter — you are welcome to try your own thing and get creative about what the form itself is — so long as the poem manages to do its work in 14 lines.

Submission guidelines

• Please send an email to jameskirkmaynard[AT]gmail[DOT]com, with the subject line of the email “Sonnet submission”. Please only 1 to 3 poems per submission. File formats include .doc. docx., pdf, .txt, .whatever. If you wish to paste them into the body of the email fine, just so long as line breaks are clear.

• Feel free to submit work simultaneously, but let me know if it is accepted elsewhere.

• Likewise, if you wish to submit work that has already been published, I see no reason to be fussy; we live in a content-full digital world these days, and the more a single poem can be put out digitally, the better, especially if it’s worth something. Of course, please let me know so I can include a link to the original publication. The rights of the poem (of course) revert to the poet after publishing.

• Include a short bio.

One of the reasons I’m doing this is to also grow a network of like minded poets, so please submit and submit regularly. And please take a moment to read some of the poems already written here. What I hope is that a dialogue will begin, there will be love stories and war stories, etc.
