I thought for this I’d share the inspiration, which are two songs each famous in their own way. Gin and Juice was originally written by the Long Beach, CA, rapper Snoop Dogg from his album Doggystyle, which, along with it’s predecessor, Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, established g-funk rap music on the west coast. It was released when I was eleven years old.
A few years later a country band called The Gourds went and did a cover of Gin and Juice, which for years was mistakenly credited to the band Phish. It became their biggest hit and crowds demanded it loudly even before a show, much to The Gourds chagrin.
You have two ways of loving this song, valid in their own right. I think this speaks to much of American culture, and our ability to reinvent with respect.
